How to Get Traffic to Your Website

The time when having a website was just enough to acquire more traffic and customers ended a few years ago. And the reality today for any business that wants to succeed online is this:
We need to become a Media Company, let me explain why, and then I’ll tell you how to do it.
We need to become a Media Company because the only way to be seen online is with quality and shareable content, but not only written content, we need images, video or audio.
The reason is simple, we need to find out who our audience is, what they what, and how they want it. This is basically what a media company does, even if the name sounds like a TV studio.
So, how to get traffic to your website?
This is what I usually do, there is no particular order to do it, I just try to apply mostly everything on my web projects and marketing campaigns depending on the goals, so let’s start it.
This is probably the easiest and fastest way to get traffic to your website. And is fast, but not cheap, there are a lot of places where you can buy ads, for example, Google, Bing, Yahoo, Facebook just to mention a few.
And the process is very easy, just a few steps depending on the provider you are working with, but is almost the same process.
- You create your ad.
- Set a daily budget.
- Publish it (and wait for approval)
- And that’s it, you have an Ad.
A piece of advice, before setting up your advertising campaign, define who your target audience is, define the message and the desired action, this way you can measure the results and adjust the campaign if is required.
Publish content on Social Media can be really helpful and can be fun, you can interact with your audience in real time, generate brand awareness, and is easy to share, and you can get ‘likes’.
There is a lot of social media channels to choose from, but the best option for your business depends on your audience. Let’s see a few of the most commons.

Search Engine Optimization
SEO or Search Engine Optimization is about to get Organic or Non-Paid Traffic to your website, and the goal is to appear on the first positions of the search results on the search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, and this is a very good way to get non-paid traffic.
If your website is on the first page results, the possibility of getting more traffic is exponential.
How to get more traffic to your website with On-Page SEO.
Select the keyword you want to rank for and your audience is searching for, and use it on the Title, Subtitles and in the content, you can use synonyms as well.
Remember your content is a conversation with your audience, so don’t overuse the keyword on your content, use it when necessary and feels natural.
Long Tail Keywords
A keyword can be one or a few words, usually, the long tail keywords are a small phrase, and are used to be very specific about what you want to rank for.
For example, let’s say you have a shoe store, and one of your keywords is ‘sports shoes’, one the long tail keyword can be ”leather running shoes for men”. This kind of keywords are very specific and easier to rank on the search engines.
Easy to Read
Easy to Read is the use of titles and subtitles (Header Tags: H1 to H6), bullet points, bold or italicized text, to give structure and relevance to certain words or phrases.
This is important because we usually don’t read all the content, we scan it, and if we find something interesting to us, we’ll read it.
Internal and External Links
Place links to other related blog posts or pages on your website when is appropriate.
The same for external or Outbound Links if necessary, these links are from your website to some other website.
Internal and External Links are really useful for SEO, is a really good way to show more content to your audience.
This part can be a little bit technical, but the metatags are little pieces of HTML “code” placed on your page. There are a lot of different meta tags, but the most commons are:
- Title Tag
Really important to have, is the one that shows what your web page is about in the search engines, and should under 60 characters. Your keyword here is a must!
- Meta Description
Is the description you can see on search pages results, should be between 120 and 158 characters. Write your keyword here, preferably at the beginning of the description.
- Alt Tag
Is an attribute only for images, and specifies an alternate text for your images. As an example, if the browser can’t display your image for whatever reason, it will show the Alt Text instead.
If you don’t know how to place meta tags on your website, my best advice is to ask your web developer to place it on your site.
Very common called Mobile Friendly or Adaptative Design. This means that your website layout changes depending on the size of the screen to provide the best experience for your audience, without pinching or zooming.
This is a file or files, like a map with all your content pages, blog posts, images, etc. This file or files need to be on the root folder of your website.
There is a lot of XML Sitemap generators on the internet, you can just Google it, generate a sitemap, and then you can upload the file to your site.
Also, there are a few tools that generate the sitemaps on your own website, like Yoast Seo plugin for WordPress, instead of upload the file, you just need to specify the URL on Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster.
Again, if you don’t know how to do this, ask your web developer to do it for you.
Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster
We need to tell the search engines about our website, and easy, we need to create an account on Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster.
The first step is to create and verify the account, then upload the XML Sitemap or Sitemaps, that includes all our web pages and blog posts.
Is easy to do it, but again if you don’t know how aks your web developer or SEO guy to do it.
Everybody loves a fast website, Google as well. Today is considered a good load speed time under two seconds. We can do a lot of things to increase the speed, like get a fast hosting service like WP Engine, optimize your images for web, use CDN like Cloudflare, etc.
If you need to increase your website load speed, and you don’t know how to, ask your web developer to do it, this can be a little bit time consuming and overwhelming.
Publish quality, relevant and valuable content on your website is very good for search engines but is more important for users.
When you help them to solve a problem with the information you are posting, or they have a good time with your content is very likely the users will return and share your content as well.
Few tips to write a successful blog.
Write Great Headlines.
Write catchy headlines, that says what your post is about, try to keep it with eight words or less.
Long Form Posts
Write a long blog post is better, the more time you spend on the website, the more likely it is that you will continue for a longer period of time. And is better for SEO.
Easy to Read
As I said on the SEO section, make it easy to read with headers and sub-headers, bullet points, chunk the content in pieces.
We tend to read only what is interesting to us, make easy to scan, if users like the content, they will read everything.
Use relevant images related to your copy, an image is easier to remember than text. Try to use good quality photos, and try to avoid free images that you can see on a lot of websites.
Don’t use large file images, remember to optimize your images for web.
Don’t use images without authorization, make sure you have the rights to use it.
Make it easy for your users to share your content, place Share Buttons on your posts, this can be a very good way to get more traffic.
Place internal and external links, as mentioned on the SEO section.
Is like a Blog, but instead of text, you post videos, and basically the same rules apply.
But if you want to go one step further, you can transcript all the content of your video, that helps a lot with SEO and there are people that like to read instead of watch videos, more when is a How To kind of video.
Some times we don’t have time to see a video or read an article, for example, when we are driving, working or exercising. So cames handy to have audio to offer to our audience.
There are different ways and styles to do it, like a monologue or interviews, kind of radio show style, or simply you can extract the audio from a video and edit it a bit.
Share your podcast on your website is the idea, but is a good idea too, share it on iTunes, Google Podcast, Spotify, etc.
As you can see, there a lot of ways to get traffic to your website, start small, one at a time, this can be slow, but the rewards are good, getting more traffic on your website, increase the possibility of more customers and more revenue.
